Description

The River Lea gazebo, located at the rear of 65 and 67 High Street, is a mid-18th century structure that was restored in 1992 by architect Dr. Mervyn Miller. This single-storey gazebo is timber-framed and weatherboarded. It features a canted oriel bay window on brackets overlooking the river, with a weatherboarded spandrel and three sash windows with glazing bars, separated by pilasters. The gazebo has a moulded wood cornice and a lead flat roof.

On the west wall, there is a single light sash window, while the north wall has a half-glazed door with a recessed lower panel that has bolection moulding, flanked by small sash windows. An extension from the 19th century, with a Welsh slated roof, is located on the east wall and contains a reset timber shell-headed niche inside. The gazebo also has a moulded wood cornice and a hipped roof, adorned with four courses of old tiles alternating with three courses of fish-scale tiles. The ridge is finished with 19th-century Staffordshire Blue open roll tiles featuring fleur-de-lys inserts over the hips, and there is a weathervane with a lurcher dog motif.

To the left of the gazebo are iron railings with a gate that once led to timber steps, which are now missing. The railings on the right connect the gazebo to the boundary wall of number 63.
