Description
House. Built in 1895 by Eustace C Frere on family property. It is an L-shaped Arts and Crafts house constructed of red brick with pebbledashed upper parts. The roof is steeply pitched, tiled with bellcast eaves, hipped to the west, and gabled over the two-and-a-half-storey cross-wing. A red brick chimney is located at the junction of the wings. The upper part of each cross wing gable projects and faces the external gable chimney, a feature similar to Thorley House of around 1902. Two-light and four-light wooden casement windows are present on the south side.
The east front of the cross-wing is notable, with flanking gable chimneys each containing a small, gabled offset just above the roofline. Corbelled kneelers adorn the eaves. A moulded brick plinth is offset, with the plinth face extending upwards as an apron to two five-light wooden mullioned and transomed windows with small panes. Small blue brick corbels are positioned at the sills, and two rows of tiles are above. The upper part, pebbledashed, features two three-light windows under the eaves.
A recessed corner porch, with a low brick surround supporting a stumpy wooden turned column on a heavy timber capping, is on the angle. Heavy beams around the corner are carved with strapwork interlace on their convex outer face, and are said to include the architect’s name. The front door is half-glazed with small panes. The staircase incorporates tapered square newel posts.
