Description
The railings, gatepiers, gates, and drinking fountain at the Parish Church of St Andrews along the road frontage were designed in 1881 by Alfred Waterhouse as part of the church built for T F Buxton of Easneye. They feature a long stretch of iron railings with cast iron spearheads, set on a flint-faced stone base. The railings are supported by taller standards with knobs and backstays. At each end, there are pairs of square gatepiers made of knapped flint, with white stone quions, an offset plinth, and large capping stones shaped like cross-gabled roofs with trefoil roll ridges. Each pair of gateposts has a square seating area on top that holds a fluted cast iron lamp standard. In the middle, there is a rectangular pier of similar design, which includes a half-octagonal corbelled stone basin on the roadside face, featuring a lion's head spout above a rusticated projecting dog basin. The remaining pair of gates at the west end has similar railings as uprights, with an arched brace rising to the center. One gate from the east pair is lying inside the grounds.
