Description

No. 5 Old Cross is a shop with a residence above, dating from the 17th century, with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring brick infill on the right side in the carriageway of No. 1 St Andrew Street, and a weatherboarded rear outshoot. It has an old tiled roof with a wooden eaves cornice.

The exterior is two storeys high, with attics in the front block. The first floor has a single flush set sash window with glazing bars and an architrave surround. The ground floor features a full-width mid to late 19th-century shopfront with an underbuilding jetty. It includes a large plate glass display window with a panelled wood stallriser and a multi-light fanlight. There is a recessed glazed door on the left, with a canted return to the shop window. The shopfront is flanked by pilasters with carved consoles and has a fascia board with a moulded surround that is planted on the jettied first floor. A single casement dormer is present, along with a yellow brick chimney that has an oversailing course and a terracotta pot. The rear slope of the roof and the outshoot are finished with corrugated asbestos.

Inside, the ground floor was originally divided into a shop and a rear living room, which features a corner fireplace. At the back is a 19th-century outshoot that includes a scullery and wash house, with lofts above. The first floor contains two rooms, each with corner fireplaces and elm plank floors. The attic has exposed purlins and a ceiled upper roof, with a narrow bay containing a stair and exposed, whitewashed fan pargeting. The cellar has red brick walls and a blue brick floor.
