Description

36 and 38 Castle Street are semi-detached houses that have been converted into offices. They were built in the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The houses are constructed from yellow stock brick in Flemish bond, with the right-hand flank and rear elevation of No. 36 now colourwashed. They feature a hipped roof covered with Welsh slate, which has a catslide at the rear. There are two central square yellow brick chimneys with oversailing courses and four orange clay pots, along with two subsidiary stacks on either side, each with two pots.

The exterior consists of six bays over two storeys. On the first floor, there are four recessed 9-pane sash windows beneath rubbed brick flat arches, with stucco sills, two for each dwelling, positioned on either side of a central slightly projecting bay that has a blind window recess. A projecting pilaster at the centre indicates the party wall that divides the two houses. The ground floor features four 12-pane sash windows and doorways in projecting bays, with recessed three-panel doors in reveals, flanked by twin panelled pilasters and semicircular fanlights. The fanlight of No. 38 has radial and sectoral patterned tracery, all set below rubbed brick semicircular arches.

At the rear of No. 36, there is a large 20th-century conservatory, while No. 38 has a single-storey lean-to outshoot with a Welsh slated roof and a square brick chimney with oversailing courses that serves a former washhouse. The interior has not been inspected.
