Description

The chapel, located 30 metres southwest of Goldings, was built in 1923 and is now used as a sports hall. It was designed by architect Walter Godfrey of Wratten and Godfrey. The structure is made of red brick in English bond with blue diaper patterns on the end elevations, featuring a limestone base and dressings, yellow sandstone windows, and a slated roof behind a brick parapet with stone copings. The chapel has parapeted gables at both ends, with lower ends featuring a Dutch profile and octagonal turrets. It showcases a mix of free Gothic and Jacobean styles, similar to the main house. The side elevations are divided by buttresses into six bays, each containing recessed three-light windows with four central arched openings and traceried cusped trefoil heads. There are projecting porches with hipped and gabled roofs, stone mullioned windows, and semicircular arched doors.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, Walter Godfrey (1881-1961) was trained under James Williams, who succeeded George Devey, the original designer of the Goldings mansion in 1870. After Williams' death in 1905, Godfrey continued Devey's practice in partnership with E Livingstone Wratten. Goldings was sold by Reginald Abel Smith, the son of the mansion's builder, to Dr Barnardo's Homes in 1921, which opened it as the William Baker Technical School in 1922. The chapel was constructed to provide a place of worship for staff and pupils, eliminating the need to walk into Hertford. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs Burnett Smith, Deputy Mayoress of Hertford, on 28 June 1923. The property was sold to Hertfordshire County Council in 1969.
