Description

The bridge over the River Beane at Goldings Park was built in 1869 as part of a series constructed by Robert Smith, the owner of Goldings. It features red and yellow brick with flint and stone dressings. The bridge has an elliptical arch made up of three rows of red brick headers alternating with stone voussoirs, along with stone impost bands and a stone keyblock that has an incised circle. The outer arch consists of yellow headers. Flint panels are present in the spandrels, and the battered piers at the abutments are adorned with flint panels and red brick quoins, as well as a stone band. The cornice is made of chamfered cream header bricks set alternately upright and inverted. There is a red brick corbel band and a stone upper band, with a red brick blocking course at the parapet, which features panelled red brick piers topped with moulded stone caps and low pyramidal tops. The bridge is completed with stack bonded brick balusters and stone copings.

Historically, Robert Smith inherited the Goldings estate in 1861, after which he demolished the old mansion, diverted and reconstructed the nearby Watton Turnpike, and built several bridges in 1869 to carry the road and the drive to Goldings over the 'Goldings Canal' and the mill race of the River Beane.
