Description

Thatched Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with later alterations in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. In the 19th century, it was divided, with the southern part used as a shop. The building was restored around 1983. It features a timber frame on a plastered brick sill, roughcast exterior, and a steep half-hipped thatched roof. The house is 1½ storeys tall and has a three-cell internal-chimney, lobby-entry plan, facing west, with a later single-storey rear wing that has a hipped tile roof.

The entrance and main chimney are located a third from the south end, while a 19th-century internal chimney is a third from the north end. The front elevation includes three 2-light flush casement windows, a half-glazed flush-beaded panelled door set in a glazed porch, and two tall swept dormers with 19th-century 2-light casements. The ridges of the roof are higher between the two chimneys.

Inside, there are jowled posts and a curved tension brace visible on the southwest stair. The rear wall plate features an edge-halved scarf joint with bridled butts. The internal structure includes 17th-century chamfered and stopped joists and an axial beam in the southern half of the hall, while the northern half has 18th-century squared joists and a higher axial beam. The floor in the northern end consists of rough split poles, leading to unheated service rooms, and there is an unheated parlour at the southern end. The framing of the lower swept dormers remains visible on the front slope, and the wall framing is exposed. The cottage was formerly known as Orchard Cottage.
