Description
No. 5 is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was divided in the 19th century into Nos. 5 and 6. The structure is timber-framed and has been cased in brick, topped with steep old red tile roofs. Adjoining to the north is a well and wellhouse, which is in its current form from the early 19th century. The wellhouse is timber-framed with herringbone red brick infill and features a tiled roof with a gabled central entrance.
The well includes a tall wood-cased pump with a finial and panelled front and rear, a panelled stone rectangular trough, and a wrought-iron S-curved handle on the north side. No. 5 extends into the southern end of this structure. The house has one and a half storeys and faces west, featuring a lobby-entry and an internal chimney plan. There is a staircase located at the rear of the stack, a rear outshut, axial floor beams, and two 3-light casement windows at different heights. The central door is disused, and there is a blocked door at one end, with the present door located at the north side along with a window to the right that leads to the extension in the wellhouse.
The house has three gabled dormers at the eaves and a central chimney in the front roofslope. The interior is said to have a massive tie-beam with a rebated moulded crown post and four-way bracing, along with a collar-purlin featuring a splayed and tabled joint, and a surviving aisle.
