Description

Hudnall Common Farm is a 16th-century farmhouse, now a private house, located in Little Gaddesden. The original timber frame was later cased in red brick during the 18th and 19th centuries. The east gable was rebuilt in brick in the late 19th century and features a canted bay window. The building is two and a half storeys high, with a three-bay plan facing north. It has four windows, featuring 2-light Yorkshire sliding casements on the first floor, and a canted bay flanked by smaller windows on the ground floor. A door is located in the right-hand (west) bay, sheltered by a gabled hood, with a single-storey extension to the west. A hipped dormer is present on the south side. The upper part of the facade displays wide-panelled timber framing with a substantial chimney in the left-hand (east) bay, serving the middle bay. The interior retains timber frame construction with jowled posts extending to the full height, straight tension braces in the side and end walls, and braces to the central upright of a cross partition separating the west bay. The roof is a clasped purlin design, featuring collars and a king strut in one truss. There are chamfered axial floor beams and chamfered heavy stone jambs to a large fireplace at the east end of the hall.
