Description

This is a pair of lock keepers' houses, built in the early to mid-19th century as part of the Grand Junction Canal (later the Grand Union Canal) network. The houses are constructed of painted red brick with hipped slate roofs. They are two storeys high with basements, facing south onto the canal, with access from the raised lockside and a rear entrance at a lower level.

The western house, numbered 111 on the door, features two windows on each floor. The first floor has 2-light casement windows with segmental arches. It also includes a recessed sash window with 2/2 panes on the left and a segmental bay window to the right of a 4-panel flush-beaded door, which is itself sheltered by a gabled trellis porch. The eastern house was originally divided into two smaller dwellings, with a shared internal chimney stack. The original front doors were aligned, although the western doorway has since been blocked. This house has a window on each floor for both dwellings. The eastern gable is stuccoed and lined to resemble ashlar, with a central basement-level door and one sash window to each floor. The windows are recessed sash windows with 3/3 panes.
