Description

No. 20, Church Street is a large house dating to the early 19th century, with later 20th-century refurbishment and a small addition. The house is constructed of gault brick and stucco, with some red brick detailing, and has a slate roof. The plan is in the shape of an "L," with a main double-pile block and a long wing to the east.

The front, south elevation is a long range of three bays. The ground floor has an ashlar-lined stucco plinth and an upper string course. The upper floor is of gault brick with dividing brick pilasters. Two brick stacks are present, one to the east of the centre, and another behind the ridge towards the west end. A central round-arched doorway is approached by steps, with a decorative overlight and a six-panel door. There are three windows on the ground floor, two to the east of the doorway, each with a moulded architrave and keystone. The windows are sash windows with side margin glazing. The first floor has three similar sash windows, each with four panes, and stone lintels.

The rear, north elevation is of red brick. The east wing has a continuous, ground-floor, slated lean-to. A short 20th-century addition is present on the west side, with a roof that slopes down to the west garden wall. The main block features three round-headed first-floor windows, two large and one smaller towards the east. These are sash windows with radial glazing, incorporating old crown glass and three-by-four panes. One of the windows has no glazing bars to the lower sash. The ground floor has a 20th-century French window with side lights, and a large fixed window on the site of an earlier window. A large red brick stack is visible where the main house meets a neighboring building. The first floor of the east wing has two 19th-century segment-headed sash windows, of four-by-four panes, one of which is blocked. A 19th-century sliding sash window with a six-by-three pane configuration is also present, along with a central red brick stack. The lean-to section has two 20th-century casement windows, each with a two-by-three pane configuration. The north end features a 20th-century section with a corrugated plastic roof. The 20th-century west side addition has a four-panelled door and a two-light casement window with a four-by-three pane configuration. A three-light, six-by-three paned window is present on the east return.

The interior includes a staircase with a shaped mahogany handrail and stick balusters. A first-floor rear room has a 19th-century marble fireplace with a pulvinated architrave and corner decorative elements. Window shutters remain, both to the ground-floor rooms facing the street and to the rear. There are two cellars, one located beneath the rear of the main block and another beneath the east wing, constructed with double tunnel vaulting.
