Description
Braids is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dating from the 14th century and mid-16th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior, topped with a hipped peg tile roof. The building has two storeys, with two-storey 20th-century extensions at the rear. On the north end, there is a jettied crosswing featuring a hipped roof and three exposed jetty brackets. An off-centre 'L' plan stack is located on the ridgeline. The front of the house includes a hipped porch, also with a peg tile roof, supported by a red brick plinth and featuring an oak door. The windows are 20th-century small pane casements. There are hipped peg tile roofed lean-tos on both ends of the building. The crosswing, which dates from the 14th century, has large centre tenoned floor joists and a cambered tie beam. The mid-16th century section includes a single bay open hall and an in-line floored end bay, with curved internal wall braces, diamond mullioned windows, and jowled posts.
