Description
Hargrave House is a large red brick mansion built in 1875 by C. R. Pritchett, now used as the Mary Macarthur Holiday Home. It is set in its own park and accessed via a drive from Cambridge Road. The house, constructed in the Jacobean style, features stone dressings and has been extended in 1880 and 1898. The main facade, facing south, showcases four Dutch gables—two large and two small—across three storeys. It has a four-window range with stone mullioned and transomed windows that include double-hung sashes behind the mullions and transoms, all dressed with stone square label moulds. At the west end, there is a two-storey canted bay, while the east end features a single-storey bay, both topped with parapets. The east and west fronts are similarly designed, with a Gothic-style entrance porch on the west. A large conservatory with ornamental glazing bars is located on the east side, connected to the main block by a glazed loggia that has three semi-circular arches and an ornamental pierced parapet with finials. The roofs are slate, adorned with many elaborate shafted chimney stacks that have ornamental caps.
