Description
This barn, located 1 meter north-east of Bridge End Farmhouse in Saffron Walden, dates from the 17th century with some refurbishment in the 18th century. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, featuring 18th-century brickwork with timber bearers under the sills and a peg-tiled roof. The barn has an L-shaped plan with a main range and a cross-wing, along with a small lean-to at the south-east end.
The principal northwest front elevation faces the farmyard, showcasing the main range to the southwest with a half-hipped roof and a flush cross-wing gable to the northeast, which has brick footings that rise to a higher level. There is a 20th-century four-panel house door inserted into the southwest-northwest side, along with an infilled earlier opening that now has a 20th-century three-light casement window. The elevation also features a high boarded loading door with an owl hole, a divided stable door, and a high 20th-century replacement two-leaf wagon door under the northeast gable, with a boarded loading door above within the gable.
The rear southeast elevation shows the cross-wing projecting at the northeast end with a half-hipped roof. There is a small weatherboarded lean-to at the west end with a corrugated asbestos cement roof. The northeast end elevation reveals the side of the cross-wing, characterized by a high brick plinth across its face, with the roof gabled to the front and half-hipped to the rear. The southwest end elevation also has a high brick plinth with timber bearers and a half-hipped gable end, along with a high boarded loading door.
Inside, the barn features primary braced studding, a side purlin roof, and slender members. The junction of the southwest range and the cross-wing displays stud mortices and a wattle groove, indicating the site of a former partition.
