Description
Lion Gate is the principal gateway to Audley End House, rebuilt in 1786. It is constructed from oolitic stone, which is now colourwashed. The gate features a large central carriageway and smaller side footways, all with semicircular arched heads set between inner and outer piers that have recessed panelled pilasters. The footways are flanked by walling with recessed panels above.
Above the central arch, there is an attic storey with an inscription panel that displays the date of 1786, topped by a Coade stone gorged lion on a chapeau inscribed "Coade, London." Additionally, draped oval Coade stone urns sit atop the flanking piers, while the lower terminal piers also have smaller similar urns, with the ones to the west made of Coade stone and those to the east in imitation. The date 1616 is set in the spandrels of the central gate arch.
The gates are wrought iron, decorated with leaf motifs, and consist of two leaves for each archway, accompanied by subsidiary iron gate piers at the central archway. All paired gates feature a dropped swept centre and spearhead railings.
