Description

Lion Lodge is a lodge built around 1846 as part of Audley End House. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and is situated near the Lion Gate. The lodge has a rectangular plan with a projection on three sides. The roofs are hidden by pierced stone parapets in an Elizabethan style. All windows are casements with cast-iron frames and lozenge and octagonal latticed glazing. Larger windows feature stone mullions and transoms.

The west front has an intentionally irregular appearance, dominated by a central two-story, full-height three-cant bay window with a single light on each floor. A plain two-story block is set back to the south, featuring a single-story porch with a single light and a solid corniced parapet decorated with Tudor roses. To the north of the bay window is a single-story unit with a "cross" window and pierced parapet. A group of tall chimney shafts with shaped brick heads rises behind the facade between the units.

The north end elevation is symmetrical with a single-story unit to the front, featuring a central rectangular bay window with mullions and transoms, a three-by-three light arrangement. Waterheads flank the bay window and are dated 1846. Behind the parapet, five grouped chimney shafts rise over a two-story block and have a stone panel bearing a coat of arms inset within a rectangular base; pierced parapets are on either side.

The east elevation is a principal two-story block with a two-story projection to the south and a single-story continuation to the north, with a lower single-story projection to the front. All windows and doors have brick reveals and segment-headed arches. The central range has single ground and first-floor windows of two lights; a doorway has a 19th-century door with four flush bead-moulded panels. A similar door is present in the north projection to the east. The south projection to the east has a single-light ground-floor window.

The south end elevation features a two-story block with two first-floor windows of two lights. The centre of the pierced parapet has additional arched decoration, with a waterhead dated 1848 below. A block set back to the west has a single-story porch, and the solid parapet continues from the front elevation. The doorway has a framed, boarded and studded door with upper triple-arcaded decoration and studs.

The rear, east elevation continues the layout. A garden wall attached to the lodge on the north side has a doorway decorated in an Elizabethan style with a parapet over shaped with triple arches and accompanying tall pyramidal finials, topped with a plain 20th-century door. The interior has not been inspected.
