Description
Cowels is a house dating from the 16th century, incorporating remains of a 14th-century cross-wing and featuring extensions from the 17th century. It has a timber frame that is plastered, with the frame exposed on the outside, and a red plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and an L-shaped plan, with the original cross-wing on the left, which was extended forward in the early 17th century. There is a range of one to two modern leaded casement windows and a 20th-century gabled porch. A mid-16th-century red brick chimney stack has been rebuilt at the top. Inside, there are stop-chamfered floor joists and beams, along with a roll-moulded mantel beam. The house is situated on a moated site.
