Description
The Guildhall is a late 15th century timber-framed building located at Ashdon Church End. It is mentioned in a will from 1501, when Roger Bryght bequeathed his property, called "Bryghtes," to the Guild of St Mary the Virgin. The first recorded mention of the Guildhall appears in the court roll for the Manor of Ashdon Hall in 1518. In 1731, the Guildhall was converted into three dwellings for poor families, and in the 20th century, it was restored and transformed back into a single tenement.
The building has two storeys, with the upper storey jettied on the north front, showcasing exposed joists and remnants of original brackets and shafts. Both the north and south fronts feature five window frames with casements that have lattice leaded lights. On the upper storey of the north front, there are remains of the sills from three original oriel windows, along with a restored boarded and studded door. The roof is tiled and has a gambrel shape at the east end. A modern porch extends from the south side.
