Description
The commemorative column, approximately 17 meters high, is located north-east of Audley End House and was erected in 1774 by Sir John Griffin Griffin. It is believed to have been designed by Robert Adam in 1763 for Capability Brown's newly landscaped park. The column is made of fine limestone in the Tuscan order and stands on a tall rectangular base made of oolitic limestone. At the top, it is surmounted by an egg-shaped, lidded urn with a gadrooned body. The north-east face of the base features a large marble plaque, which is now badly weathered, that records its erection in gratitude to Elizabeth, Countess of Portsmouth, by her heir and nephew.
