Description

The south boundary wall to Audley End Park runs along Audley End Road for 1,120 meters from Lion Lodge to the edge of Saffron Walden. This wall dates back to the early 17th century and is constructed of red brick with some yellow bricks, primarily in English bond, with patches of garden wall bond. The inner face features a stretch of flint facing at the western end. The height of the wall varies as it ascends the hill to the east, with a plinth that offsets along the wall to accommodate the slope, though it does not always align with the lifts at the wall head. The central section reaches approximately 5.5 meters in height but tapers down at the eastern end and is stepped down at the western end. The western end has a brick-built, shaped coping with diagonal dentils, while the eastern end is plain. There are three gateways and one doorway along the wall. The first gateway, located 160 meters from the west, features an original doorway with a 4-centred arched head, made of oak, framed and boarded, and studded. At 340 meters, there is an original gateway that is 4 meters wide with octagonal piers, although this gateway is now blocked with similar bricks, and the upper stage of the piers is missing. At 655 meters, there is a gateway at Icehouse Lodge, and at 820 meters, there is a 19th-century gateway made of yellow brick, flanked by stretches of yellow brick walling that are each 20 meters long, with plain piers at the gate and the ends of the wall extensions, and a pair of wooden doors.
