Description
Stansted Hall is a large red brick mansion with stone dressings, built in the Jacobean style by Robert Armstrong in 1871. The house is set back about 300 meters from the road and is accessed via a drive. It is partly three storeys and partly two storeys with attics. The symmetrical south front features a window arrangement of 1:2:1:2:1, with the outer and central sections projecting slightly and topped with Dutch gables. The main block has two dormers with smaller Dutch gables and a balustraded parapet above a cornice. The windows are stone mullioned and transomed casements with stone dressings. At both the east and west ends, there are two-storey canted bays with open work parapets. To the east of the main block, there is a single-storey wing featuring semi-circular headed windows and end gables with central semi-circular headed windows flanked by circular openings and topped with semi-circular pediments. This wing is connected to the main block by an arcade of semi-circular arches, complete with pilasters, a cornice, and a pierced ornamental parapet. Additionally, there is a small tower with a pyramid roof. The north and west fronts are designed similarly to the south front, with the north front featuring a semi-circular arched central doorway and an oriel bay window above. The roofs are slate, adorned with many tall chimney stacks that have multiple octagonal shafts.
