Description
The Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building located on Maple Lane in Wimbish. This flint and stone church has origins dating back to the early 12th century. The nave is from this early period, while in the late 13th century, around 1280, the nave was extended and a north aisle was added, featuring quatrefoil piers in the nave arcade. A north chapel was constructed around 1340, and the chancel was rebuilt in the 15th century, during which a south porch was also added. The roof of the north aisle is dated 1534, as indicated by one of the traceried spandrels of the braces, and the roof of the north chapel dates from the 16th century.
In 1740, the west tower was struck by lightning and subsequently rebuilt, but this later tower was demolished in 1883. There has been some restoration and rebuilding of the chancel and west wall in the 19th century. The south doorway, dating from the 12th century, features two orders of columns, some of which are adorned with spiral carved ornamentation. Noteworthy late 14th-century screens separate the chancel from the nave and the north chapel. The north aisle also houses a fine brass memorial of Sir John de Wantone, who died in 1347, and his wife Ellen. The church is recognized for its significant 12th and 13th-century architectural features, as well as the 14th-century screens.
