Description
The building at 5 High Street is an early 19th century house, built on the site of an earlier structure. The front of the building is faced with Flemish bond gault brickwork, while the rear sections are of red brick, one with a decorative grey diaper pattern. The front range has a roof of plain tiles, while complex arrangements of gabled and hipped roofs cover the rear ranges, one of slate and one of plain tiles.
The front elevation is divided into two sections with differing eave lines. The southern section has a moulded cornice with a concealed gutter and two roof lights. A full-height pilaster pier marks the southern end. The first floor has four double-hung sash windows with 12 panes each, all with rendered window heads. The ground floor of this section has four matching windows, along with a doorcase featuring Tuscan pilasters, a cornice hood, and panelled reveals. The door itself consists of six moulded panels and is approached by three stone steps. A taller section of the front elevation features a full-height, canted bay window with small panes. A large chimney stack is located behind the front range.
The south flank of the front range, facing a passage, is of red brick and incorporates a blind arch-headed recess on the first floor. A doorcase from the early 19th century is present on the ground floor with a flat hood, a rectangular fanlight, and a boot scraper. The south rear range has two roof lights and a brickwork pattern using blue bricks. It has a four-window range of double-hung sash windows with 12 panes. The north rear range has three similar window ranges, all with segmental arched brick heads over the windows.
