Description

7 Myddylton Place is a house located in Saffron Walden, dating from the mid-17th century, with refurbishments from the 18th century, early 19th-century additions, and 20th-century restoration. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with some brickwork and a peg-tile roof, and has a rectangular plan. It stands two storeys high with an attic. The northwest front elevation is rendered and features 20th-century panelled basket decoration. There are two windows, a central 20th-century doorway, and a door. All windows have moulded architraves and are fitted with 20th-century two-light casements with four panes by four panes. There are stacks at the northeast and southwest ends of the house.

The rear southeast elevation includes a ground-floor peg-tiled lean-to with the stump of an old rear stack. It has a 20th-century boarded door, a 19th-century fixed light with four panes by five panes and an inserted hinged casement light, and two 20th-century casements—one two-light and one single. There are also two gabled dormer windows with early 20th-century two-light casements with four panes by three panes.

Inside, the house was once two separate homes, and the front door has been reset from its former position. Evidence of an old stairway site remains. The end gable fireplaces are identical, with the ground floor featuring original timber lintels and the first floor having brick arches. The framing is robust and of a 17th-century style rather than an 18th-century type. Two doors with 17th-century panelling are still present. The rear garden wall is listed under No. 3 High Street.
