Description
A small barn and byre, dating back to around 1600, stands to the northwest of Woodstone. It is a timber-framed structure, clad in weatherboarding, originally comprising five bays. The roof is hipped and covered in slate. A cart entrance was added later in the centre, with a lean-to roof on the south side and a gable on the north.
The barn features jowled storey posts with long carved arched braces supporting the tie-beams. Curved wall bracing is present in each bay. The roof rafters have been reduced in two places to accommodate side purlins, with wind bracing and short collars. A tiny “gablet” at one end is hidden by later cladding. The barn is unusually well-proportioned and detailed for its date. The scarf joints are halved and bridled.
