Description

No. 44 Church Street is an early 19th-century shop with a flat roof, located in Harwich. It is constructed of rendered brickwork, with low-pitched gabled Welsh slate roofs and red brick stacks at each gable end. The building has cellars and an 'L' plan form.

The first floor has two double-hung sash windows with small panes. The ground floor features a 19th-century fishmonger’s shop front with a long fascia and cornice/hood supported on six panelled Tuscan pilasters. Two north-west pilasters enclose a pair of double-hung sash windows with small panes. A 20th-century door is positioned centrally between the pilasters, alongside a wide four-light shop window with a pierced ventilator strip. A boarded cellar opening is visible below the shop window. The rear elevation has two projecting gables, one with an off-centre end stack, and walls rendered with a pebbledash finish. The interior contains reused late medieval or 16th-century timbers, including a bridging joist and spine beams with run-out stops.
