Description
The stable range located 10 metres south-east of Houbridge Hall Farmhouse is an early 19th-century structure. It is built from red brick in Flemish bond and has a slate roof. The long range faces north-east, with a gabled end facing the road. It is a single storey building featuring 10 semi-circular windows with gauged brick arches; two of these windows are blocked, while the others have been altered to rectangular casements, with one aperture extended downwards. The stable range includes two halved boarded doors, one plain boarded door, and a pair of double doors, one of which is halved. There are also three blocked door openings, two of which have shallow segmental arches of gauged brick. The low-pitched roof has one in-pitch skylight near the right end. At the right end, the stable is connected to a weatherboarded and pantiled bakehouse or ancillary building, which is of less architectural interest. This stable range is depicted in the tithe award of 1841 from the Essex Record Office. It is included for its group value.
