Description
This is an ancillary building, likely a range of kennels, located approximately 25 metres southeast of Tolleshunt D'Arcy Hall. It dates from the 16th century, with later alterations. The rear wall is constructed of brick in English bond, while the rest of the building is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The structure has eight short bays facing northeast and is a single storey high, featuring seven plain boarded doors. It has heavy studding and a collar-rafter roof. The rear wall is part of the wall inside the moat, which is listed separately. The timber structure includes a significant amount of reused timber, and while it is not precisely datable, the horizontal section of the rafters and collar-rafter construction suggest it originates from the 16th century, likely contemporary with the wall, bridge, and dovecote on the same moated site. The building has served various purposes over time, including as poultry and general storage, but its form and size indicate it was originally used as kennels. It is included for its group value.
