Description
Kelvedon Hall is a house dating from the late 17th century, though it has earlier origins. It is constructed of timber framing and painted brick, topped with a square hipped and sprocketed red plain tiled roof. The building features three hipped dormers at the front and two similar dormers at the rear, along with four red brick chimney stacks. The house has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, with a moulded eaves cornice and a central band. The dormers contain 19th-century two-light casements with central glazing bars.
The front facade includes a three-window range of three-light Venetian windows with glazing bars, which have internal panelled reveal shutters, except for the centrally located first-floor window, which is a vertically sliding sash with glazing bars. The entrance features a central six-panelled door with a moulded surround, frieze, and pediment.
Inside, many original features are preserved, including moulded wainscots and architraves, a traceried light above the door, and a moulded string staircase. The panelling consists of beaded vertical boarding, and there is a moulded surround to an alcove cupboard with curved shelves. A red brick curved fireplace, likely from the 16th century, adds to the character of the house. Kelvedon Hall is a good example of its architectural type.
