Description

Ewell Hall is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier and was extended in the 18th century. It features a mix of construction styles, including partly timber framed and plastered sections, as well as areas built of painted brick in Flemish bond. The roof is covered with handmade red plain tiles. The building has a complex plan that faces northwest and includes several distinct parts:

  1. An 18th-century brick range with a stack in the left wall and an axial stack near the right end.
  2. A timber-framed parallel range at the rear with a hipped roof that does not extend to the left end.
  3. A long catslide extension in the left rear corner and a lean-to extension along the back of the second range, along with a small 20th-century extension.
  4. Two parallel ranges to the right of the main assembly, each with one stack between them and one axial stack in each, creating an approximately rectangular layout.

The house is two storeys tall. On the ground floor of the main range, there are three sashes with 16 lights, featuring shallow segmental arches made of gauged brick and crown glass. The first floor has three similar sashes and an additional sash with 12 lights. There is an off-centre six-panel door set in a doorcase with simple pilasters, a moulded pediment, and panelled jambs and soffit. The eaves cornice is moulded and has modillions. In the brick service wing to the right, there is one sash with 12 lights and one blocked window aperture on each floor. For more details about the interior, refer to the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments.
