Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a former parish church located on First Avenue in Latton. It features a west tower, nave, and chancel, which were likely built in the 12th century. A north chapel was added around 1470, and a south porch made of brick and timber was constructed in the 16th century. The west tower is made of brick and coarsed stones, topped with an embattled parapet, a short spire, and a vane, and includes a stair-turret at the south-east corner. The south porch has red brick walls up to sill-height, with a timber structure and roof that features cusped verge-boards. The nave contains three south windows, two of which are from the 15th and 16th centuries. The church has a 15th-century east window, and the north chapel includes a window in its north-west wall with two cinque-foiled lights in a square head, complete with a label and well-crafted head-stops. The north chapel has retained much of the original colour and gilding of its timber roof, as noted by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
