Description
Brick Lodge Cottage is a cottage built around 1830, located adjacent to the towpath approximately 400 metres southwest of Roydon Mill, near Harlow. The cottage is constructed of painted brick and features a slate roof with two ridge chimneys, one at each end. It has a basic two-cell structure with a central doorway that has a segmental brick arch and a timber flush four-panel door. Above the doorway is an oval plaque displaying a raised hand motif and the initials "G.D. 1830," which refers to Sir George Duckett, who oversaw the construction of the Stort Navigation. On either side of the doorway, there are two-centred pointed arch windows with cast iron glazing bars in a Gothic style and brick drip mouldings above. The rear of the cottage and a small brick outbuilding to the northeast feature cast iron side-hung casement windows. This cottage is an intact example of a lock keeper's residence situated next to a working lock.
