Description
The granary located approximately 50 meters southeast of Lambourne Hall dates from the late 16th century and was extended in the 18th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with no roofing material noted as of July 1983. The structure is supported on twelve piers made of tarred red brick. The original part features jowled posts and arched braces that are trenched inside the studs, while the northwest extension has unjowled posts and primary straight bracing. The granary has heavy studding and an inserted tie beam across the middle of the original structure. It has a hipped roof with clasped purlins. It is likely that the granary has been relocated, as early granaries typically sit within 5 meters of the back door, which is usually guarded by the same dog. The current brick piers support this theory, as they are much later than the original structure. Granaries from the 16th century are rare, with another example located at Colville Hall in White Roding.
