Description
Roding Restaurant is a group of three properties from different periods, including medieval and later structures, that have been combined to create a restaurant. The buildings are timber framed and plastered, with one section featuring exposed framing, and they are roofed with handmade red clay tiles. The three properties are aligned northeast-southwest, with a southeast aspect.
At the northeast end is a 2-bay block from the 15th century, which is jettied at the front and partly underbuilt with shop windows. The exposed framing is visible from the jetty upwards, and there are two chimney stacks at the west corner. To the southwest of this is a 3-bay block from the 17th or 18th century, which has one internal chimney stack located behind the ridge and a rear extension aligned northwest-southeast. Further southwest is a 3-bay block with a gambrel roof from the 19th century, which has a shorter parallel range at the rear with one axial chimney stack from the 20th century, and the west corners have been built out to the Silver Street frontage.
The buildings are two storeys tall, featuring three glazed doors and continuous ground floor windows across the first two blocks, while the third block has a shop window and two casement windows. There are eight first-floor windows, all from the 20th century with diamond leading. The first block exhibits close studding, curved tension braces, and a collar of a clasped purlin roof, with most of the framing exposed internally. The first block also has a hollow-chamfered binding beam, unchamfered joists of horizontal section jointed with soffit tenons, which are unrefined. Evidence of a former partition enclosing an entrance passage is present on the northeast side, with blocked doorways at both ends (the doorheads are missing) and one doorway leading into the remainder. The clasped purlin roof features arched wind bracing.
