Description

The Cottage and The Mews is a coach-house and stable block dating from the early 19th century, located approximately 40 meters north of Forest House in Chigwell. It has been converted into two dwellings in the 20th century. The building is constructed from stock bricks in Flemish bond and features slate roofs.

The structure includes a square coach-house with an upper floor, flanked by two equal single-storey wings to the northwest and southeast. The northwest wing consists of a cottage with one internal chimney stack, while the southeast wing contains two stables. An extension was added to the southeast wing in the 19th century, featuring a lean-to roof.

On the southwest elevation, there are five round arches made of gauged brick, which are now blocked and replaced with 20th-century windows. A string course of stucco runs at the level of the arch springs on the wings, with a rectangular recess above each arch. There is a dentilled band across the middle arch, which was formerly the top of the coach entrance. The first floor has three double-hung sash windows with six lights, set under segmental brick arches from the early 19th century. The roof of the central block is pyramidal, while the wings have hipped roofs, all with a shallow pitch.

The northeast elevation, which faces the road, features two double-hung sash windows with six lights and segmental arches of gauged brick, along with a similar blank aperture between them on each floor, with a chimney located behind the blanks. Each side has two arched recesses; the outer ones are blank, while the inner ones contain windows similar to those described. There is also a string course of stucco at the arch spring level.
