Description
The White House is a house located in a pleasant garden to the east of the church on Ongar High Street. It is likely from the 16th century, with a date of 1599 found on a beam that was previously in the attic, but it was extensively altered in the 18th century. The building is mainly timber-framed and plastered, with the front wall made of gault brick around 1835, now painted white. It features a double range roof covered in red plain tiles and has two storeys, a basement, and attics with four flat-headed dormers. The front has a range of four small-paned, vertical sliding sash windows and a plain parapet. The central entrance has a 20th-century glazed door and surround, with a porch supported by four square pillars with moulded bases and capitals beneath a flat canopy. To the left, there is an attached red brick diagonal shaft chimney, a large rectangular chimney stack with six chimney pots in the center, and another red brick stack to the right. Inside, there is notable 18th-century panelling in the lounge and hall, along with a fine fireplace. The ceilings have moulded cornices, and the hall alcove features fluted pilasters with moulded capitals. A fine 18th-century staircase is also present, and there is reputedly a 16th-century fireplace in one of the attics.
