Description
Rowes Farmhouse, now divided into cottages, dates from around 1610 and features a timber-framed and plastered structure over two storeys. The building is shaped like an 'L' and has a half-hipped peg tile roof, with a lower service block located at the north-east corner. There is a gable end stack at the west end and a small ridgeline stack towards the west end. A very large red brick stack from the late 17th century is located on the north wall of the main block and extends through the roof of the service block, which has an inglenook fireplace below. The service block also includes a red brick lean-to on its west side, topped with a slate roof. The farmhouse has a robust frame with a mix of jowled and unjowled posts, consisting of four bays, and features a heavy side purlin roof supported by square queen posts with large curved wind bracing. The bridging joists and posts are heavily stop-chamfered. Notably, there is no evidence of an original chimney stack, and the service block appears to be an extension from the mid-17th century.
