Description
Waltham Abbey Walls, including the Chapter House Wall built in 1767, are remnants from the late 12th century or early 13th century, dating back to the rebuilding period after 1184 when the Priory was raised to Abbey status and before the church was rededicated in 1242. The walls are constructed of rubble, with some flintwork and red brickwork, some of which may be original. The north-west section later became part of Abbey House and features brick fireplaces from the time of Sir Edward Denny, who died in 1399. There is a blocked mullioned and transomed window, and two red brick piers in the center of the north wall have stone plinths and pyramidal caps. Abbey House was demolished in 1770. The walls are part of a group that includes the Church of the Holy Cross and St Lawrence, Abbey Gateway, Midnight Chapel, Harolds Bridge, and the Vicarage.
