Description

Waltham Abbey Vicarage is a late 16th century or early 17th century L-shaped building located on Highbridge Street. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring three windows. The high-pitched roof is covered with renewed tiles, gabled at the left, and has a projecting section under the gable at the right. There is one original and one renewed brick chimney, along with two later flat-headed dormers. The walls are stuccoed, and the sash windows, some of which have been renewed, include glazing bars set in near flush, moulded frames. The ground floor windows are fitted with old external shutters.

Within the L-shaped section, there is a projecting ground-floor area that includes an early 19th century entrance porch supported by square wood columns, featuring a cornice hood and trellised sides. The door has two glazed panels above and rusticated panels below, framed by a reeded architrave. At the back, there are two round-headed late 18th century windows, one of which is in a gabled extension and features a patterned radial head that may have originally served as a door fanlight.

Notably, Joseph Hall, who later became Bishop of Exeter and Norwich, lived here from 1612 to 1634, and Thomas Fuller, a cleric and historian, resided here from 1649 to 1657. The vicarage is listed partly for its historic interest and is part of a group that includes the Church of the Holy Cross and St Lawrence, Abbey Gateway, Midnight Chapel, Harolds Bridge, and the Walls of the Abbey and Chapter House, as well as the Garden Wall.
