Description
The barn at Litle Hyde Hall Farm, dating from the late 16th century, is a high, steep-roofed gabled structure that is weatherboarded and timber-framed, consisting of six bays. There is a one-bay stable extension to the north that matches the height of the barn. The barn features a central projecting gabled porch with small recessed outshuts on either side and is set on a low brick plinth built in English bond. The walls are notably low, and the roof is framed with clasped purlins, collars, and diminished principals, with one purlin on each slope and evidence of windbraces in each bay. Long curved braces connect heavily jowled posts to low tie beams, and queen struts have been added. The original heavy wall studs have edge holes and slots for wattle infill. There is a central rear winnowing door flanked by posts and tension braces. The roof is covered with asbestos sheets, but irregular battens suggest that it was once thatched. The porch roof and the roof of the southern five bays have been reconstructed, the latter featuring diagonal corner ties and wrought iron brackets connecting the posts to the tie beams. The interior walls of this section are also weatherboarded. This barn is a rare example of a medieval type where storage is primarily located in the roof.
