Description

Butchers Farmhouse is an 18th-century house that was extended in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building is oriented approximately east-west and faces south, featuring an internal chimney stack in each gable. At the eastern end, there is a single-storey bakehouse or brewhouse with an end chimney, which dates from the 19th century. Additionally, there is a single-storey lean-to extension at the rear, also from the 19th century.

The farmhouse has two storeys with attics and a cellar. The central entrance features a four-panel door, flanked by a double-hung sash window with 16 lights on each side. On the first floor, there are three double-hung sash windows with 12 lights, although one window has been boarded over since July 1963. A dentilled course runs below the eaves, and there is a central flat-roofed dormer with a gambrel roof, giving the facade a symmetrical appearance. Inside, transverse beams are boxed in, and there is an original plain staircase that connects the ground floor to the attic, constructed using pegs. Notably, the floor of the western attic is approximately 30 centimeters higher than that of the eastern attic, providing greater headroom in one of the first-floor bedrooms.

Originally, there were three front dormers, but in the early 20th century, two became defective and were covered over, with window openings created in the gables instead. Aside from this change and the replacement of the front door in the 19th century, the house has remained largely unaltered. Other similar houses in the parish were built by the Albyns estate, but they have undergone more alterations.
