Description

House. Possibly dating back to the mid-13th century or earlier, this is a high-quality aisled hall that has undergone alterations in the 15th, 16th, and 19th centuries. The house is timber framed and plastered with a red plain tile roof. It has two storeys and a three-window front with late 19th-century vertical sliding sash windows. A late 16th-century red brick chimney features grouped diagonal shafts. The building has a complex plan, with an original aisled hall potentially dating from around 1140, partly re-roofed in 1299. The roof is collared and includes trenched straight racking braces; the central couple is paired with secondary rafters passing through tie beam flanks. Earlier arcade posts are octagonal, with moulded bases and capitals. Arch braces support the arcade plates, and cambered aisle ties are present. There's a normal assembly at eaves. A parallel range of four bays was added around 1400 to the north, with a long wall jetty, a carved bressumer, and the original door and doorway. The roof of this range is of a crown post construction, with cambered tie beams and spandrel bracing. The south-east wing is of medieval origin, while the north-west wing dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. A late 18th-century wing extends to the north. Numerous original details from each period survive, including a 16th-century staircase. The group value of this building lies in its exceptional historical significance and well-preserved architectural features.
