Description

The Balkerne Gate is a Roman gateway, likely dating from the 2nd century, and is the only remaining gateway in the town wall. It is a remarkable monument and the best preserved Roman gateway in the country, as well as the largest, measuring 107 feet wide with two carriageways and two footways. Although it has been over-built by the Hole-in-the-wall Public House, the north tower still stands at 20 feet high, and the arches of the south footway rise to 13 feet.
