Description
Bourne Mill is a Grade I listed building located on Bourne Road, built in 1591 by the Lucas family using materials from the destroyed St John's Abbey, which previously owned Bourne Ponds. It was likely constructed on the site of an earlier mill and its ornate design suggests it was originally intended as a fishing lodge. In the 17th century, it was repurposed as a cloth mill for Dutch refugees and continued in this use until the mid-19th century when it was converted into a corn mill.
The building is two storeys high and features elaborate Dutch gables at each end, which have curved and voluted offsets topped with pinnacles, and an octagonal chimney stack at the apex. The south gable displays a stone panel inscribed "Thomas Lucas, miles, me fecit Anne Domini 1591." The front of the mill has original windows with stone mullions and moulded labels, along with an original doorway that has a square head, a moulded label, and a moulded panel above featuring the Lucas arms. There is also a weatherboarded 19th-century hoist loft.
Inside, which has been converted into a dwelling house, the mill machinery is still present, including three large grindstones and the water wheel. This building is exceptional and very picturesque.
