Description

Garrison Church is a military church built in 1856. It features a timber frame with weatherboarding and has a rectangular aisled plan with vestries on either side of the east end. The church is a single-storey, 8-bay structure, with the frame visible externally. It has triple round-arched windows with horizontal glazing bars, deep eaves, and a front gable that includes outer windows with a taller central light. The central section has two-light round-arched windows with two transoms, each above a round-arched doorway with double doors. A clock is located beneath the apex, topped with a small louvred bellcote. The east end has plain gabled vestries.

Inside, square timber nave posts and cast-iron brackets support iron trusses. Historically, this church is significant as the only surviving part of the temporary hut camp established for the Crimean War. It is comparable to a later corrugated iron-clad timber church at Bisley, Hampshire, and two contemporary examples at Aldershot, which have since been demolished. Timber huts were commonly used for barracks and hospitals in the early 19th century, but they are now very rare. The church is recognized for its considerable historic interest as the only barracks church of its type in the country.
