Description

Oaks Farmhouse is a farmhouse that may have originally served as a standing or hunting lodge. It dates from the early 19th century and late 16th century. The front range is built of red brick and features a low pitched slate roof, while the rear range is timber-framed, with parts made of brick and rendered surfaces. The front range has wide overhanging eaves and bargeboards, along with a stack at each gable end. The front elevation includes a central, simple doorcase with pilasters, a six-panel door, and a rectangular fanlight above. On either side of the door are contemporary double-hung sash windows, which have plastered flat arches and squarish panes. A string band runs between the floors.

The rear range consists of two timber-framed structures with peg tile roofs that meet at right angles. The southern structure features a large single bay on each floor and is constructed with good timber framing, showcasing an elegant arch-braced side purlin roof. This section is open framed against the northern block and has a large early 17th-century stack with offsets on its rear wall. The other block also has a single bay on each floor and was formerly jettied at the front, with the jetty still largely intact against the back wall of the front block. The front elevation of this block, which was originally gabled, shows remnants of 'T pattern' windows with moulded mullions. Its roof is also side purlin with wind braces, although differing in detail from the southern block. The earlier block seems to have been an independent, non-residential structure that was later enlarged to become a dwelling. Its hilltop location offers an excellent view, suggesting its original purpose as a standing or hunting lodge.
