Description

Rolls Cottage is a house located on Peldon Road, dating from the mid to late 16th century, with later alterations and 20th-century extensions. The building features a plastered timber frame, with close-studding exposed on the west front. It has a plain tile roof with gabled ends and brick axial stacks. The original house consists of a single-room plan at the south end, which includes a lateral stack and a later outshut at the rear (east). A two-storey 20th-century extension is at the north end, while a single-storey extension is at the south end. The original house is two storeys tall with an attic, showcasing a close-studded timber frame on the west front, which has four over eight pane sash windows on each floor and a 20th-century bay window to the left. The eaves of the 20th-century extension on the left (north) are higher, and the single-storey extension on the right (south) has a flat roof. At the rear, the main roof slopes down in a catslide over the outshut, which features a small gabled dormer above. The outshut continues to the right behind the 20th-century extension.

Inside, the close-studding and wall braces are exposed. There are intersecting chamfered cross and axial beams with cyma stops and unchamfered joists, supported by posts with moulded brackets or capitals. The first-floor chamber contains a chamfered tie beam with run-out stops on jowled posts and a clasped purlin roof structure. The interior also features old plank doors, a notable 17th-century plank cupboard door on the landing with large inscribed lozenges and simple butterfly hinges, and a staircase with a balustrade of pierced splat balusters, chamfered newels, and a moulded handrail.
