Description
Fingringhoe Mill is a former tidemill that was later used as a store. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was clad in asbestos sheeting after 1952. Only the southern part of the building is considered to have listing quality. The mill is timber-framed and originally clad in weatherboarding, which is now hidden beneath the asbestos sheeting. The roof, also covered in slate, is concealed under the same material. The building has two storeys and attics, with irregular window placement, many of which have been blocked since the mid-20th century. The west elevation has been raised, while the south elevation features a hoist, unloading doors, and a wide entrance added in the late 20th century. The east elevation has five windows, with three central windows being five-light pivoting casements and the end windows being 12-pane sashes. Inside, the mill retains its frame, including original rafters without a ridgepiece, blocked-in sash windows, original floors, chamfered beams, and a wall frame with diagonal braces. Reused timbers include octagonal barge masts. A breast shot water wheel is said to survive underneath the building.
