Description
The Church of St Andrew is a Grade I listed parish church located on Abberton Road in Fingringhoe. The nave dates from the 12th century and features one complete window and one fragmentary window made of Roman brick. The chancel, south aisle, south chapel, and west tower were added in the 14th century. The tower is constructed with bands of flint rubble and limestone, and has chequerwork at the base. The 15th-century south porch also showcases chequered flintwork, with carved spandrels on the outer doorway and a notable 14th-century inner door. Inside, there are interesting remains of wall paintings depicting the Virgin, St Christopher, St Michael, a seated woman, and Christ as the man of sorrows. A brass commemorating John Alleyne from around 1600 and a monument to George Frewe from 1655 can also be found here. The church has a red plain tiled roof, and the nave roof is of an unusual design, featuring a round arch to double collars and clasping the collar purlin, with diagonal spurs adorned with fine portrait heads. The south door dates from the late 14th century.
